Supercell Sets the Final Dates for Squad Busters: 1 December Off the Stores, 14 December Offline
Supercell has confirmed the end date for Squad Busters, according to Mobilegamer.biz on 14 October. The game leaves the App Store and Google Play on 1 December and stops being playable on 14 December, when all events and timers end. Players who already have it installed can keep playing until then.
How it got here
Supercell first announced last October that it was ending development, and in-app purchases were switched off at that point. The game launched worldwide in May 2024. Mobilegamer.biz reports that Supercell saw no clear path forward after several reworks, including the large Heroes update, and that further changes would have turned it into an almost entirely different game. The company has also ruled out offline play, private servers and releasing the code.
The numbers, as estimated
AppMagic estimates put lifetime revenue at about $67.9 million from 58.6 million downloads, with the US providing around 30 percent of spending. That works out to roughly $1.16 per download. These are third-party estimates, not figures from Supercell.
The Squad Busters team has stayed at Supercell, and most members are helping other teams, according to the report.
Part of a wider October
Mobilegamer.biz notes this is one of three mobile closures announced this month, alongside Rainbow Six Mobile and Lego Hill Climb Adventures. Different companies and different reasons, but the same message: a live game has to keep earning its place, even at a studio with Supercell's resources.
What a small studio can take from it
Our own takeaways are modest. Know in advance what you will do if a live game does not find its audience, including how players keep what they paid for. Treat an end-of-service plan as part of the design. And keep the game small enough that a hard decision does not mean a hard year for the whole team. Supercell can move a team to other projects; many studios cannot.
If you have played Squad Busters, what will you remember about it?
